In Japan, Seville's original popular dancing (sevillanas) is practiced mainly by women. It endows them with not only mere physical exercise, but also becomes an exotic, cheerful and communicative act, that is a cultural one as well. Two worlds are connected, that of the Andalusian dance (linked to joy and pleasure) and that of the Japanese discipline (related to the learning of something useful and practical in order to gain physical benefits). The women grow to create a micro-world, an oasis in their daily life, after the interpretation, modification and appropriation of a foreign cultural element.
The installation entails the typical Sevilles's Feria de Abril booth, but in a reduced scale, and also the space in which it is showed. Consisting only of percussion and hand clapping, the sevillanas' sound that is composed by David Alarcón will fill the whole space. The booth, placed in the centre of the room, will be illuminated from above in a darkened space. An 8,5 inches Tv monitor will show a dancing couple practising sevillanas in a Japanese learning academy.
