(The Death of Heidi, Wanko-chanīs Suicide)

Multimedia Installation
Spain 2004, Diptycheach photograph, Video for monitor; Mini DV, PAL, 5:4, No sound, 2'48''

The installation, consisting of a video and photographic diptych, marks the end for Kaoru Katayama of the adventures of her alter-ego in the mythical land of Wanko-chan. The diptych La Muerte de Heidi (The Death of Heidi), raises a question mark over the disappearance of her character, using the logic of the "before and after" type images. In the first photo, we can see Heidi looking out, with her back to the camera, over the idyllic landscape of the banks of Lake Covadonga (Asturias). In the next image, within the same frame, the figure seems to have disappeared living nothing but her shoes behind, methodically arranged on the ground, and raising the doubt as to whether our heroine had really killed herself in the lake. In the video, El Suicidio de Wanko-chan (The Suicide of Wanko-chan), which we can suppose takes place after the mysterious death of Heidi, the dog appears for the first time, outside his fantasy world, sat at a bar, drowning his sorrows after the tragic disappearance of his companion and the world that the two of them shared together.
